A UN envoy expressed his hope on Thursday that a forthcoming meeting of leaders of rebel movements in the western Sudanese region of Darfur would be successful, said media reports.
The African Union and the United Nations as well as regional actors are ready to help making the meeting in Arusha, Tanzania, a success, Jan Eliasson, UN secretary general's special envoy for Darfur, was quoted as saying.
According to the UN envoy, the meeting to be held in Arusha on Aug. 3, will bring together leading personalities of the Darfur rebel movements.
"We will discuss the coordination of positions; we will require from all a cessation of hostilities, as we have already from the ( Sudanese) government, and to begin normalization of the situation and preparations for the negotiations," Eliasson said.
"I see great risks if we do not succeed. I see the danger that this conflict turns into a new type of conflict," he stressed.
Eliasson, however, admitted that he and AU special envoy for Darfur Salim Ahmed Salim "had some difficulties in finding and being in contact" with the Darfur rebel groups due to their proliferation.
"It has been a real problem that they have been fragmented," said the UN envoy, adding that "they would be encouraged to bring their positions together and unify them as much as possible."
The Sudanese government has complained that the proliferation of the rebel movements had made it difficult to reach a comprehensive peace deal if they failed to unify their negotiation positions.
