France and the Arab League (AL) on Thursday agreed that the time has come to help the Lebanese activate dialogue and to foster confidence-building among them. French envoy Jean-Claude Cousseran in charge of the inter- Lebanese dialogue made the remarks in a statement after his talks with AL Secretary General Amr Moussa. Cousseran briefed Moussa on the results of the talks recently held by the Lebanese rival parties at de Celle-Saint Cloud in Paris, which was initiated and sponsored by the French government. The French envoy also noted that French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner is scheduled to visit Beirut at the end of July as part of the next French moves for the fence-mending Lebanese talks. France and the AL agreed on the necessity to maintain consultations and coordinate their moves on Lebanon, the AL spokesman Alaa Rushdi said.
Also on Thursday, Cousseran held talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit and discussed Arab and international efforts exerted to settle the Lebanese crisis along with the results of the July 14-15 de Celle-Saint Cloud talks. The two-day closed-door meeting marks the first time that the 14 Lebanese rival parties have converged to seek solution to the political crisis since a national dialogue failed to ease the tension last November.
Egypt is keen on reaching coordination among the Lebanese regarding the Lebanese presidential elections and the formation of a national unity government, Abul Gheit told Cousseran, welcoming efforts that could contribute to settling the Lebanese crisis. Egypt is part of Cousseran's recent Arab tour which already took him to Syria. Cousseran is expected to visit Saudi Arabia and Lebanon to continue efforts to push efforts to solve the Lebanon crisis.
Lebanon is facing its most serious political crisis since the end of the 1975-1990 civil war, with the government led by Prime Minister Fouad Seniora and the Hezbollah-led opposition locked in a fierce power struggle.
