Serbia hails Western withdrawal of draft UN resolution on Kosovo |

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica Friday hailed his country and its ally Russia''s success in compelling the Western countries to withdraw the latest draft resolution on Kosovo from the UN Security Council.
"The withdrawal of the new draft resolution which should have paved the way to independence for Kosovo has extraordinary importance for Serbia and is a triumph of law over the attempt to seize Serbia''s territory," Kostunica said in a statement.
He said that the joint principled policy adopted by Serbia and Russia achieved major success in the UN Security Council in defending universal fundaments of international law and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia.
Earlier on Friday, France''s UN Ambassador Jean-Marc de la Sabliere said in New York that the United States and five EU member states, faced with the threat of a veto by Russia, has decided to give up their attempts to resolve the status of Kosovo in the UN Security Council and to transfer the process to the so- called Contact Group composed of the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Russia.
"We regret ... that it has been impossible to secure such a resolution in the United Nations Security Council," said de la Sabliere on behalf of the resolution''s sponsors.
"We will therefore put on hold discussions on the resolution," he said after council consultations.
Kosovo, which legally remains a Serbian province, has been under UN administration since 1999 under the UN Security Council Resolution 1244.
