He emphasized that the commissioned officers must observe personal and professional discipline they carry out numerous assignments both locally and abroad. Kibaki also commended the soldiers for the role they play as humanitarian providers and development partners to local communities in various parts of the country. The Kenyan leader emphasized that he will continue to provide opportunities for officers in the armed forces to advance their knowledge through training and ensure they have the necessary resources, facilities and equipment to meet the numerous security challenges.
Kenyan peacekeepers have served in 16 different countries in Africa, the Middle East, the Balkans and Asia. The period of deployment varies from mission to mission in accordance with the complexities of each conflict situation. This has so far ranged from one to eight years and currently Kenyan peacekeeping contingents are in deployment in nine different countries.
The east African nation is the sixth largest troop contributing nation to the UN peacekeeping operations worldwide.
