The Ethiopian prime minister said the issue has nothing to do with vengeance and it rather is the issue of ensuring the supremacy of the law. He said CUD leaderships had admitted that their attempt to change constitutionally organized institutions through force was incorrect. Meles said they not only requested apology to the people and government of Ethiopia but also pledged to safeguard the constitution. He dismissed the allegation that the CUD leaderships had signed the pardon plea through forceful means as groundless.
Meles said the government has not held any negotiation with any foreign government regarding the issue of CUD leadership as foreign interference in the internal affairs of the nation is not allowed.
He said the government had held discussion with local elders led by Professor Ephrem Yishak regarding the stated subject.
Commenting on the allegation that the process of adjudication of the CUD leaderships will weaken strong political competition in the country in the future, Meles said the measure taken was correct and appropriate. It will also open a door for strong political competition in the future, he added. Meles said the government will continue to be committed to ensuring good governance and building democracy. The CUD leadership had sent a pardon request letters to Prime Minister Meles on June 22 and 25.
