Pratibha Patil, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate who is also supported by the Left Front and other parties, held an early lead by taking a vote value of 67710 after some voting have been counted, which began on Saturday. Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, who is backed by the UPA rival opposition National Democratic Alliance led by the BharatiyaJanata Party, got a vote value of 35670.
Although 4,120 Members of Local Assemblies (MLAs) and 776 Members of Parliament (MPs) constitute the electoral college, some parties' decision to keep away from the battle means the number of voters is going to come down. If all these people voted, the total value of the electoral college is calculated as 1.09 million votes. The value of an MP's vote is 708 while that of an MLA depends on the basis of the population of a state.
According to P.D.T. Achary, the returning officer for the presidential poll, 88.5 percent voting was registered in parliament where MPs voted and 91 percent in the State Assemblies.
