U.S. President George W. Bush temporarily ceded presidential power to Vice President Dick Cheney Saturday for a routine colonoscopy. Cheney has taken over as acting president until Bush, who will be under anesthesia during the colon screening later in the day, says he is ready to resume duties. The colonoscopy will be conducted at the presidential retreat of Camp David, Maryland. In a letter sent to the leaders of the House and Senate, Bush announced that he had temporarily transferred his authority at 7:16 a.m. (1116 GMT) to Cheney, who is at his home in St Michael''s, Maryland, 50 km east of Washington.
"The vice president is now serving as acting president," White House spokesman Scott Stanzel told reporters. The temporary transfer of power will end once Bush sends a second letter to the leadership of the Congress after the colonoscopy, he added.
It is the second time that Bush has handed over his powers to Cheney due to a colonoscopy.
