The European Union (EU) must have a common position on the issue of Kosovo, Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Amado said Saturday. After meeting with visiting French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, Amado said it will be difficult to solve the issue if EU members differ with one another.
Kosovo and the EU's stance had become a "concern" for Portugal, which holds the current presidency of the 27-member bloc, he added. However, Amado said, his country will still make efforts during its presidency to persuade EU members to reach a consensus on the issue. He added that Portugal hoped all EU member states would support and cooperate with it on Kosovo. For his part, Kouchner said that under the complicated situation at present, it is important for the EU to hold together.
On Friday, Western nations announced that they are not seeking a UN Security Council vote on their draft resolution concerning Kosovo's future status. EU foreign ministers will discuss Kosovo at a meeting on July 23. Kosovo, a breakaway province of Serbia, has been under UN administration since 1999. Ethnic Albanians make up 90 percent of the population.
