However, Hamas, which is sworn to Israel''s destruction, was " not interested in opening free talks that may end with giving up our rights," Zahar said.

The Quartet has asked Hamas to recognize Israel, renounce violence and respect interim peace deals, but Hamas has often rejected the conditions.

As a result of the infighting, Palestinian territories are now de facto divided into two parts, the Gaza Strip under the sacked unity government led by Ismail Haneya of Hamas and the West Bank under the caretaker government headed by Salam Fayyad.
