He noted that earthquakes that have been shaking the region in the last two weeks have caused panic. "But panic will not happen if we have knowledge of their cause and preparedness against them is to be successfully undertaken," he said.
A series of tremors have rocked the East African countries since a strong earthquake, measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, which hit the Northern Tanzanian town of Arusha, struck the area around Lake Natron on Tuesday last week.
In Kampala, Geology specialists asserted that Uganda was in a safe zone, even though the country experienced an earthquake last month and last week. The tremors, which also hit parts of Kenya, appeared milder but created more fear. The Golden Spear initiative was started in 2000 by the United States Central Command as a forum to discuss security issues with ministerial and military leadership in the region. The concept expanded to include discussions on topics of immediate concern to all regional response to disasters. The Golden Spear countries include Burundi, Djibouti, Egypt, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Democratic Republic of Congo.
