UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi described her nomination as a " historic occasion" in India''s 60th year of independence. However, Patil''s nomination provoked controversies in India. It started a day before her filing of nomination papers when Rajani Patil, a widow of the murdered congressman, in a press conference in New Delhi alleged Patil of using her influence for shielding her brother G.N. Patil in the murder case. Another controversy is about the Pratibha Mahila Sahakari Bank, a cooperative bank set up by Patil in 1973 in her name. However, the bank had its license revoked in 2003 by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for alleged financial irregularities.
However, Patil''s supporters insisted that she was not the founding president of the bank and that she held the job of the chairperson for only a month and eight days. They also claimed that the RBI has never mentioned Patil''s name in the report. Source: Xinhua [1] [2]
