The Kenyan government said Friday it was refurbishing seismic stations in the country to enable geological experts efficiently analyze data being collected at various stations. Mutua said in a statement issued in Nairobi that seismic data is now digital and the analysis process is almost automatic with data being received immediately from the relevant seismic machines. Several workers in Nairobi declined to enter buildings on Wednesday worried about their safety as fear gripped parts of the Kenya after five days of repeated tremors with a magnitude of between 4 and 6 hitting the city. So far there are no casualties or major damage has been reported but some buildings within Nairobi''s central business district were evacuated on Wednesday. Oldonyo Lengai Mountain has been associated with volcanism in the recent past. In 1966, the mountain had a major eruption and in 1988, there was an eruption resulting in silent lava flows.
The last time a major earthquake shook the region was December 2005, which registered 6.8 on the Richter scale. That sent many people in high-rise buildings in Nairobi scurrying into the streets.
