The ruling Tiko i Madagasikara (TIM), or I Love Madagascar party, was in majority in the parliament with the other parties forming the opposition.

Terms will be over for most of National Assembly members at the end of the year.

Madagascar is a republic with a pluralist, democratic constitution approved by a national referendum in 1992.

The National Assembly consists of 160 representatives elected by direct vote every five years. The last election was held in December 2002.
