Reducing electricity wastage is being considered as a key short- term strategy to deal with the crisis. The statement said the program has recorded tremendous success resulting in a saving of at least 183 watts from each household at peak time if one receives only one-14W energy savers in exchange of three incandescent bulbs. At the end of the distribution exercise, 30 mega watts (MW) will be saved at peak hours, said the statement. To encourage their use, the government scrapped taxes on the energy savers thus increasing sales through lowering retail prices from 20,000 Ugandan shillings (about 12.5 U.S. dollars) to an average of 5,000 shillings (3.125 dollars).
However, the energy ministry estimated that in most industries lighting consumes between 5 to 25 percent of the total energy while in residential and commercial premises, lighting constitutes up to 80 percent of the energy. The statement said the ministry has been conducting detailed energy audits in industries, institutions and commercial buildings and areas where electricity is being wasted.
