A suicide truck bomb struck a building of a tribal gathering in the town of Taji north of Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least three people and wounding 10 others, an Interior Ministry source said.

"A suicide bomber drove an explosive-laden truck into the building of Sahwat al-Taji Council, in the town of Taji, 20 km north of Baghdad and blew it up, killing at least three people and wounding more than 10 others," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The powerful blast destroyed parts of the building and damaged several nearby buildings, the source added.

Sahwat al-Taji, or the National Awakening Council, is a gathering formed by the tribal chiefs of the area with the aim of fighting al-Qaida network in Iraq.

Such tribal councils first appeared in the western province of Anbar after residents often blame al-Qaida organization in Iraq for deadly attacks after rifts emerged between Sunni tribes and al- Qaida militants.

Al-Qaida's adherence to a hardline form of Sunni Islam and indiscriminate killings has brought it into conflict with some Sunni tribes in the Anbar and other Iraqi area.
