At least seven Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist)(CPN-M) fighters have run away from their camps situated at southeastern Nepal, reported the local media website THT online Sunday.

According to CPN-M sources, the fighters of the "People's Liberation Army (PLA)" cantoned at the first division at the Yangshila sub-camp in Morang District, some 240 km southeast of Kathmandu, fled with their arms and ammunition on Friday following internal argument among themselves.

The escaped combatants were verified by the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) during the first phase of the verification process.

The CPN-M command has deployed cadres of its sister organization Young Communist League (YCL) to locate and bring back the escapees. Since Saturday, YCL cadres have been searching for them in the neighboring Sunsari district, some 220 km from Kathmandu.

Three busloads of YCL cadres and several more on motorcycles mounted a night-long search for the PLA soldiers and they are still searching, said inspector Krishna Raut at the police post in Sunsari.

The Home Ministry also has been informed of the seven combatants escape, said inspector Raut.

Meanwhile, YCL Sunsari coordinator Vishwajeet Tharu, who reached Sunsari district in course of the hunt for the seven escapees, confirmed that they had fled with arms but did not specify what kind of arms they took with them.

However, first division commander of the CPN-M Parwana claimed that none of the fighters had fled the cantonments.

Once in a while some combatants do go out with some purpose but the news of seven fighters fleeing the cantonment is not true, Parwana added.
