Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdul Ilah Khatib held talks with visiting Israeli Knesset (parliament) Speaker Dalia Itzik on Sunday, the official Petra news agency reported. During their meeting, Khatib highlighted the necessity to solve the Palestinian issue, the centerpiece of their talks.
"It was important to move forward on a political track that leads to a just and permanent solution to the Palestinian issue," the top diplomat said.
In addition, he called for supporting the Palestinian National Authority and easing the suffering of the Palestinian people through lifting restrictions imposed on the Palestinians, Petra said. Khatib said that he and Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit is to visit Israel next Wednesday and that is part of efforts exerted to activate the Arab Peace Initiative based on international legitimacy resolutions. The initiative offers Israel normalization of ties with Arab nations in exchange for full withdrawal from Arab lands occupied during the 1967 war, the creation of a Palestinian state and a return of refugees.
