Sudanese President Omer Al- Bashir on Sunday declared in Fashir, the capital city of North Darfur State, the year 2007 would be a year for peace in Darfur.

Addressing a mass rally, the Sudanese president urged the rebels in the conflict-torn western Sudanese region of Darfur to join the peace process.

He called for the stoppage of the war in Darfur and the movement toward peace and rehabilitation, stressing that Sudan with its economic and manpower resources was capable to become a big power.

Al-Bashir said that the Sudanese Council of Ministers had arrived in Darfur to see the situation on the ground and to find the best solution.

He warned that western forces were attempting to split the people of Darfur in a way that was similar to what was happening in Iraq, calling on Darfur people not to give a chance for these western forces.

The Sudanese president arrived in Darfur on Saturday on a rare visit in the region, which will last for three days.

On Sunday morning, the Sudanese Council of Ministers held in Fashir a meeting in which it listened to reporters delivered by governors of the three states in Darfur as well as cabinet ministers on the situations and efforts of the government to achieve peace and rehabilitation in the region.
