Riding hundreds buses and motorcycles, the protesters from the two local partners of Nike Inc., the Naga Sakti Pharama Shoes Corp. , and Hardaya Aneka Shoes Corps.,staged rallies outside of trade ministry, the Indonesian shoe association office and the stock exchange building in the capital of Jakarta, where the Nike Indonesia takes office.
The rally is ahead of the meeting of the Indonesian government, Nike representative and the owner of the companies on Tuesday in Singapore.
The rally aimed at sending messages to the government representatives and Nike Inc., to meet the demand of over 14,000 workers, whom have cooperated with Nike Indonesia for about 18 years. Some of the protesters came to the office of Nike Indonesia at the Stock Exchange Building in the down town, but failed to meet officials, as the office had been empty.
"We have sealed the Nike office," said Sunardi a coordinator of the workers. He treathened to bring more people should their demand would not be complied by Nike Inc.. "If Nike does not respond, we all must call Nike must exit from Indonesia," said Sunardi. On Tuesday''s meeting in Singapore, Indonesia will be represented by the chief of Investment Coordinating Board Muhammad Lutfi, the owner of the two local companies and the representative of Nike Inc.. "I send this message to the government, which will have a meeting tomorrow, please meet this aspiration," he said.
