Palestinian Islamic Hamas movement welcomed on Monday the results of Turkish parliamentary elections in which the ruling Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) won a landslide victory. "The victory by the Justice and Development Party holds signs of people's trend toward the Islamic project," said Hamas spokesman in Gaza, Sami Abu Zuhri.
"This is proof that the Muslim people are certain they have no future without the Islamic choice," added the spokesman whose faction did the same as the Turkish counterpart in Palestinian elections in early 2006.
But the international community boycotted Hamas and imposed a siege on the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) after the Islamic movement formed the government, pressing the faction to recognize Israel, peace deals and renounce violence.
The power-struggle between the two movements has recently led to early elections call by the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) in response to Hamas' takeover of Gaza Strip.
