Earlier the Nike Inc., has decided to terminate contracts with the two local companies due to poor quality reason, and planned to find other local partners.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked for the best settlement of the dispute.
The President Director of the owners of the two companies and Hartati Murdaya quoted by Antara News agency as saying that she had asked Nike Inc., not to stop its orders to the two companies all at once, but one by one owing to the fact that the two companies had employed about 14,000 workers. She said that the two companies had been receiving shoe-making orders for 20 years from Nike Inc.
Murdaya said that her companies faced difficulties to comply with the price request of Nike because the wages of their workers who had been working with them for over 15 years, had reached over 1,000,000 rupiah (some 100 U.S. dollars) plus an over time payment of over 2 million rupiah (about 200 U.S. dollars). "The price offered by Nike is 11 U.S. dollars a pair of shoes. This is cheaper than the 15 U.S. dollars price a pair 15-18 years ago. Now it is trying to find new factories which offer lower prices of 10 U.S. dollars or even seven U.S. dollars a pair," she said. Source: Xinhua [1] [2]
