On the issue of the breakaway Serb province of Kosovo, the EU ministers will mainly discuss the next steps to take after the Western nations announced last Friday that they were not seeking a UN Security Council vote on their draft resolution concerning Kosovo''s future status. The draft resolution was sponsored by Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and the United States.
According to French UN Ambassador Jean-Marc De La Sabliere, the negotiations will now be pursued through the Contact Group on Kosovo, including Britain, France, Italy, Germany, the United States and Russia. Russia is against the draft, which calls for further negotiations between Belgrade and Kosovo''s ethic Albanians during a 120-day period but drops a previous reference to an automatic road to internationally supervised independence if the talks fail. On Monday, the EU foreign ministers will also discuss the strained relations between Russia and Britain, which are wrangling over the poisoning issue of former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko. The Mideast peace process, Iran''s nuclear issue and the situation in western Sudan''s Darfur region will also be touched on by the ministers.
