Cameroon has held both legislative and municipal elections amid reports of relatively low voter turnout.
The turnout in the elections, which took place Sunday, was particularly subdued in the capital of Yaounde where less than 50 percent of the registered voters tuned up to vote, according to election observers.
As planned, voting ended at 18:00 local time (17:00 GMT) for the process of counting the votes to start. The final results of the polls are expected to be made public in the coming days.
About 41 political parties out of the 270 parties, which are registered in Cameroon, took part in the elections with 1,274 candidates contesting to be elected to the 180-seat national assembly and another 24,820 candidates vying for the 6,514 municipal positions that are vacant.
The ruling Democratic Rally of the Cameroonian People (RDPC), party of Cameroonian President Paul Biya, which had a total of 149 parliamentarians in the outgoing parliament, is largely expected to conserve its dominant position in the national assembly.
