The eleventh Arab-African parliamentary conference started deliberations here on Monday, gathering representatives from 30 Arab and African countries.

In his opening remarks, Chairman of the Arab Inter- Parliamentary Union (AIPU) Abdel Hadi Al-Majal underlined the union's support for all initiatives that help in developing prospects of the Arab-African parliamentary cooperation and boosting values of communication between the Arabs and the Africans as to serve the joint interests of both peoples.

He condemned international double standards when dealing with the region's issues, citing the example of the Arab-Israeli conflicts.

He also warned that the situation in Iraq and Sudan's Darfur would have graver ramifications on regional security and stability if violence is not stemmed.

For his part, Conference President and Syrian Parliament Speaker Mahmoud Al-Abrash said the Arab and the African nations face the same challenges and suffer from the same problems caused by the long history of colonization in the past.

The two-day conference would discuss various issues of politics, economy, and social affairs in the region, particularly cooperation and coordination among the countries and means to boost human development and parliamentary dialogue.
