German Chancellor Angela Merkel extended on Monday her congratulations to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the winning of the election.

"This convincing victory is also a personal success for you," said Merkel in a statement, adding that she hoped for continued constructive cooperation with Turkey.

Earlier on Sunday, Erdogan's party, the AKP, won nearly half of the entire votes during the general election in Turkey.

According to German news agency DPA, Merkel also telephoned Erdogan, and the two leaders agreed to keep working on German- Turkish relations, particularly to help in the integration of Turkish immigrants in Germany.
