A suspected bank robber and killer has been arrested in Portugal after a joint operation between Spanish and Portuguese police, official sources said on Monday. The alleged criminal, known as "El Solitario", was arrested in Portugal's Figueira da Foz on the coast in the north of the country.
"El Solitario" is accused of killing two Spanish Civil Guard officers in June 2004 in Castejon, in the northern Spanish province of Navarra, when the officers tried to arrest him for a traffic violation.
The alleged criminal is also accused of the murder of a municipal policeman in Vall d'Uixo, Castellon, Spain.
"El Solitario" was carrying two weapons at the time of his arrest.
Portuguese officials said "El Solitario" is Spain's most sought criminal, accused of some 30 bank robberies. The alleged criminal's most recent bank robbery occurred in May 2007, making off with a 6,000-euro (some 7,800 U.S. dollars) loot from a bank branch in the locality of Toro, in Zamora, northern Spain. He often operated alone during robberies, hence his nickname. Officials believe he has stolen some 780,000 dollars in total.
