Dozens of armed men ambushed police on Monday and freed one of Central America's major drug traffickers as he was en route to stand trial, Guatemalan police said. Cornelio Chilel, who was accused of murdering and smuggling of drugs, arms and humans, was freed by about 30 armed men who leapt from vehicles that had been used to block the road and ambushed police as Chilel was being transported through San Marcos to stand trial in the country's capital, a police spokesman said. Two of the attackers were killed and three policemen were wounded in the shootout, said the spokesman. Chilel, 46, is thought to be a major link between a heroin processing group in Mexico and organized crime nets operating from Guatemala.
