The interior ministers of Spain and Portugal met here Monday to discuss cooperating on anti-terrorism measures.
Spanish Foreign Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba's visit to Portugal came after a vehicle loaded with explosives, apparently belonging to the Basque separatist ETA organization, was found near the border with Portugal.
"This is the first time we have evidence that ETA operates in Portugal to reach Andalucia (southern Spain), it is a route they have probably chosen due to the police pressure," Rubalcaba said. "The question is if ETA has infrastructure in Portugal," he added. Police forces of both countries are investigating possible ETA operations to find out if the Basque group has installed infrastructure in Portugal. Pereira said Portugal has joined hands with Spain in "the threat against terrorist attacks."
"We do not expect an imminent terrorist attack, but there is prevention against fundamentalist terrorism and against ETA's terrorism," he said. The two ministers also talked about illegal immigration and fire fighting issues.
