Hundreds of police troops on Monday were deployed at Cerro del Fortin, the site of Oaxaca's annual Guelaguetza festival, causing tension in Mexico's southern Oaxaca state. The police force was deployed to avoid protests against local governor Ulises Ruiz during the festival since protesters accused him of power abuse and demanded his resignation.
Police patrolled Guelaguetza Auditorium, the site of the festival's open-air performances. The Guelaguetza festival was not celebrated in 2006 in Oaxaca's capital, Oaxaca city, due to protests that lasted over half a year.
This festival is one of Oaxaca's main tourist attractions.
The protesters demanding Ruiz's resignation belong to Oaxaca's People Popular Assembly (APPO). The conflict between local governor Ruiz and APPO in 2006 caused at least 20 deaths. On July 16, a clash between Oaxaca's state police and APPO protesters left dozens of people injured and some 40 arrested. Source: Xinhua
