Four suspected New People's Army ( NPA) rebels were killed in an encounter with Army soldiers in the central Philippines Monday afternoon, the Philippine Army said on Tuesday.
About 4:30 p.m., a squad of the 22nd Infantry Battalion were fired upon by five NPA rebels in Salvacion village in Sorsogon city, triggering the firefight, Army spokesman Ernesto Torres told a press briefing.
The government forces suffered no casualties while the bodies of the four slain rebels were recovered from the encounter site, said Torres.
Torres said the operating troops also recovered three M16 rifles, a Garand rifle, two ICOM radios and four packs containing subversive documents said to be of high intelligence value.
The anti-government NPA reportedly has 7,000-strong guerrilla troops all over the Philippines. The government shifts the policies of military crackdown and peace talks toward the rebels from time to time.
