France will try to push Lebanon's rival political parties to resume talks, visiting French envoy Jean-Claude Cousseran said on Monday.
Cousseran, former French ambassador to Damascus, said France's efforts to resolve the Lebanese crisis had received active support from Syrian authorities, but denied France had negotiated with Syria. Cousseran met with Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora and the leader of the parliamentary majority, Saad Hariri, after his arrival earlier in the day. During his three-day visit in Lebanon, Cousseran will also hold talks with representatives from various of Lebanese political parties including Hezbollah. Cousseran has already visited Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Syria and Iran where he urged leaders to help promote the inter-Lebanese dialogue and national reconciliation. Earlier this month, France hosted a conference for conciliation among the warring Lebanese parties in a bid to rebuild confidence and resume talks.
The Lebanese political arena has been split with the opposition holding an ongoing sit-in in downtown Beirut and campaigning for the formation of a new government.
