Russia should work more closely with Western states to fight their joint threats, Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph published on Tuesday.

Scheffer said Russia was still a NATO partner and "I am very much in favor of engaging and investing in this partnership."

"It is important that we fight together the faceless common threat of terrorism," he said.

"The threats and challenges that we are faced with in 2007 and beyond are not basically different in Moscow than they are in Washington, Paris, London or The Hague and Brussels," said the NATO leader.

Noting Russia and NATO have different opinions "on missile defense, on Kosovo and on the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty," he said a new Cold War is wanted by neither Russia nor NATO.

On Monday Scheffer met British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The Russian-British ties have worsened and Russia expelled four British diplomats last week and suspended cooperation with London on fighting terrorism. The move came after Britain said it would expel four Russian diplomats in London in retaliation for Moscow's refusal to extradite Andrei Lugovoi who has been accused by Britain of poisoning a dissident former Russian agent in London.
