Civil servants across Nepal halted their work Tuesday at the call of three unions of government employees, demanding the government to provide security at work places. According to local website thehimalayantimes.com report, the three government employees' associations called a pen down for a day to press the government to meet their demands. Meanwhile, the agitating Village Development Committee (VDC) secretaries continued their strike that has been on for the last few days, demanding security following the killing of a VDC secretary in Siraha.
The Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha (Terai Democratic Liberation Front) led by Jwala Singh (JTMM-J) killed VDC secretary Ramhari Pokhrel, who was abducted in Siraha district, some 150 km south of Kathmandu last Wednesday. The VDC secretaries have warned they won't resume work until the government takes strong action against Pokharel's murderers, provides suitable compensation to his family, declares him a martyr and guarantees adequate security to the employees of hilly origin in Terai. Altogether seven government employees, most of them of hilly origin, have been killed in the Terai districts in southern Nepal by various armed outfits, including the JTMM-J, which have vowed to flush out people of hilly origin living in the Terai region.
