An Iranian military F7 fighter jet crashed Monday afternoon in the northeastern province of Khorassan Razavi, but the pilot managed to eject and was unharmed, local media reported on Tuesday.
The F7 was en route to the 14th air force base when it crashed in Shandiz region, 1,000 km northeast of the capital Tehran, due to technical failures, according to local Fars news agency.
The fighter jet crashed at 15:00 local time (1130 GMT) on Monday, the report said, adding that a team of experts were carrying out further investigation.
The official IRNA news agency quoted Gholam-Reza Zinat-Bakhsh, who is in charge of the public relations office of the 14th air force base in the provincial capital city of Mashhad, as saying that "technical defect" was the cause of the accident.
The pilot managed to eject moments before the plane crashed, IRNA said, adding that more information would be released after investigations over the cause of the crash are completed.
