The Japanese government does not support Taiwan's bid to become a member of the United Nations, Japanese Foreign Ministry Press Secretary Mitsuo Sakaba said on Tuesday.

"It is our basic policy in line with the Japan-China joint declaration not to treat Taiwan as a nation or a government," the spokesman said at a regular press conference in the afternoon, adding that "from this standpoint we cannot support Taiwan's membership."

He said that to be a nation is the prerequisite for applying to join the UN.

The Taiwan issue should be resolved peacefully through direct dialogue between the two sides of the straits, and the Japanese government hopes that such a dialogue could be realized at an early stage, Sakaba said.

Based on this point of view, he said, the Japanese government does not support any unilateral attempt to change the status quo.
