Albania's President-elect Bamir Topi was sworn in to office on Tuesday afternoon at a ceremony held at the country's parliament.

After parliament he was driven directly to the presidential Palace of Brigades to attend a handover ceremony hosted by the sitting President Alfred Moisiu whose term expires on July 24.

Topi, 50, was elected by parliament last Friday at the fourth try after the ruling Democratic Party-led coalition and the opposition Socialist Party-led bloc failed to achieve the end in the three previous rounds.

Topi, deputy leader of the ruling Democratic Party, won 85 votes, while another candidate Neritan Ceka from the Democratic Alliance got five.

Albanian president is chosen by a three-fifths majority in the parliament, or 84 of the legislature's 140 seats. The president has power over the country's judiciary and armed forces.

Topi, a biologist by profession, once served as the country's agriculture minister. He will be in the post of presidency for five years.
