Visiting French envoy Jean-Claude Cousseran talked with Lebanese leaders Tuesday aimed to set the stage for a visit by French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and promote dialogue to settle the ongoing Lebanese political crisis. Cousseran's talks with the Lebanese officials focused on the inter-Lebanese dialogue hosted by Paris earlier this month and the framework for Kouchner's visit to Beirut scheduled for Saturday, local Naharnet news website reported. During the second day of his visit to Lebanon, Cousseran talked with Lebanese former President Amin Gemayel, Social Affairs Minister Nayla Mouawad, and senior lawmakers Butros Harb and Michael Murr, according to the report. On Monday, the French envoy held talks with Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora, head of Lebanon's parliamentary majority Saad Hariri, and the opposition Free Patriotic Movement leader Michael Aoun. Earlier this month, France hosted a conference for conciliation among the warring Lebanese parties in a bid to rebuild confidence and resume dialogue. Lebanon is facing its most serious political crisis since the end of the 1975-90 civil war, with the government led by the prime minister and the Hezbollah-led opposition locked in a fierce power struggle.
In mid November last year, Lebanon plunged into the political crisis when six Muslim ministers resigned from the government after the breakdown of talks about giving the opposition alliance more authority.
