Spain has arrested a suspected double spy, accusing him of selling information to a foreign country, the chief of Spain's National Intelligence Center Alberto Saiz said on Tuesday.

Roberto Florez Garcia, 42, is accused of offering classified information to "a foreign intelligence service in exchange for a large sum of money" between the end of 2001 and early 2004, Saiz told a press conference, but declining to identify the buyer. However, local radio Cadena Ser said the buyer was Russia.

The leaked information included the identities of Spanish spies and data on Spanish intelligence procedures and structure, Saiz said, noting no information about Spain's anti-terror fight or information that could damage the security of the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was revealed.

"This case is unique in all the history of Spain's intelligence service," he said.

Florez was arrested in Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands, on Monday. He has been under investigation since July 2005.
