Spain's National Intelligence Center (CNI) has arrested a suspected double agent for selling information to Russia, CNI director Alberto Saiz said in a press conference Tuesday. Roberto Florez Garcia, 42, who had been working for Russia since 2004, was arrested in Tenerife on Monday.
"This case is unique in all the history of Spain's intelligence services," Saiz said, adding that the arrestee had worked for an "foreign intelligence service in exchange for large sums of money, " and had leaked information about his organization, its internal procedures, counter-intelligence services and the names of Spanish agents.
But the double agent had not put the Spanish national security, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or the European Union in danger. The CNI had ordered an internal investigation since July 2005, after evidence of a security leak. Upon detection, the center worked hard to limit damage to its procedures, structure and activities. Garcia was formally charged with treason after being arrested.
