French defense ministry Wednesday confirmed that a French soldier serving with the United Nations had been killed during a mine clearance operation in southern Lebanon. French defense minister Herve Morin expressed "his profound emotion" following the death of the officer, who died "while serving a very noble cause for the restoration of peace," the ministry said in a statement. The minister "shares fully in the loss of the family and comrades of the soldier," and "pays tribute to the courage and professionalism with which the departed serviceman carried out his duties." Yasmina Bouziane, spokeswoman of the United Nations Forces in Lebanon, Wednesday announced the death of a UN soldier during a minesweeping exercise in southern Lebanon without giving details on the nationality.
