Visiting Tony Blair, the new envoy of the international Middle East Quartet, held talks Wednesday in Abu Dhabi with Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on issues concerning the Mideast peace.

During their meeting, Blair and the UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed the current efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East and also exchanged views on issues of common concern, Emirates News Agency reported.

According to the report, Blair briefed Sheikh Abdullah on the talks he held earlier with Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

"Th time is ripe for developing a real mechanism to bring about peace in the region," Blair was quoted as saying.

Sheikh Abdullah welcomed appointment of Blair, the former British prime minister, as the Quartet's Middle East peace envoy and wished him success in his mission.

The UAE foreign minister also stressed the importance of exerting more efforts to achieve comprehensive and just peace in the Middle East and enabling the Palestinian people to regain their legitimate rights by establishing their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.

Blair came to visit the UAE on Wednesday, the fourth leg of his first regional tour as new envoy of the international Quartet, which has taken him to Jordan, Israel and the West Bank.
