The south Jakarta district court is to try the corruption case involving former president Soeharto and alleged 1.54 billion U.S. dollars on August 9, a prosecutor of the Attorney General Office said here Thursday. Prosecutor Dachmer Munthe said the demand was to make the former strongman return the funds that he had illegally collected from the banks and the people. The first trial will be conducted on August 9, Munthe told Xinhua. Soeharto was charged over the misuse of education funds from state-owed banks to one of his foundations Supersemar that was established in 1974. During his rule, Soeharto had asked the banks to set aside 5 percent of their profits for financing scholarships for university students through the foundation, but he channeled half of the funds to his family and colleagues companies, including the companies of his youngest son Tommy Hutomo Mandala Putra, said prosecutors of the Attorney General Office. Soeharto had ruled Indonesia for 32 years and was toppled by a mass riot in 1998 following the Asian financial crisis. Soeharto has been prosecuted for foundation fraud. But the cases have dropped several times by the court and also prosecutor due to his health condition.
