Crime cases like snatch theft, rape and murder in Singapore increased in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year, according to the latest crime statistics released by the Singapore Police Force on Thursday.

But overall crime in the low-crime-rate city state with 4.5 million population remained at the same level for the same period last year, police said.

The overall crime recorded 16,118 cases in the first six months of this year, up 25 cases compared to the 16,093 cases in the same period last year, said police on its website.

Police were particularly concerned with the number of elderly victims falling prey to snatch theft. In January to June, there were 88 elderly victims of snatch theft, up 45 persons in the same period last year.

Elderly victims of cheating and related offenses also rose from 50 to 61 persons in the same period.

Rape saw the greatest percentage increase of 32 percent. Police said about 90 percent of the rape cases involved offenders who were known to their victims.

Motor vehicle theft cases also rose by about 26 percent from some 430 cases last year to about 540 cases. Most of the stolen vehicles were motorcycles.

Housebreaking and related offenses went down from 560 to about 500 while murder cases also dropped from 12 to 6, and all of these cases have since been solved.

In terms of arrest, the total number of persons arrested registered a 5 percent decrease for the first half of this year. Youth arrests also recorded a decrease of 3 percent as compared to the same period last year.

Police said the fall in arrests were largely attributable to a fall in certain theft categories.
