Mauritania and Spain have reached an agreement to regulate and manage migration of workers between the two countries.
It is hoped that the agreement, which was signed Wednesday, will lead to an orderly and coherent migration in accordance with the spirit of the bilateral cooperation agreement on the movement and immigration of people that was reached by the two countries on July 1, 2003.
The objective of the latest agreement is to enable the nationals from either of the two countries to settle and enjoy their rights as recognized under international regulations while living in the other country.
Through the agreement, the two countries are trying to harness the benefits of immigration, which can potentially contribute to economic and social development through the promotion of cultural diversity and transfer of technology, for the good of the people of the two countries. Based on the need to respect and uphold the rights, obligations and guaranties as recognized by the laws of the two countries, the agreement is geared towards reinforcing the general framework for cooperation between Spain and Mauritania besides preventing illegal immigration.
Meanwhile, the provisions of the agreement, which requires a migrant worker from one country to acquire a work permit and enter into an employment contract prior to moving to the other country, will not be applicable to refugees, visiting artists, sailors, diplomats and consular workers.
