The Lebanese army, backed with heavy artillery, on Thursday thrusted into an enclave of the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp where a few remaining Fatah al-Islam militants were holing up, the official National News Agency reported.
With heavy artillery, the army fired the Fatah al-Islam location in the northeastern area of the camp, which is located some 12 km north of Lebanese northern city of Tripoli.
After the artillery barrage, the army entered the area to conduct house-to-house fighting, said the report.
The army said in a statement published Thursday that its troops had "discovered trenches and hideouts inside the buildings where they found weapons, rocket-propelled grenades, various ammunition, detonators, explosives, monitoring equipment and ready made meals. "
The Lebanese army have been battling with the militants of Fatah al-Islam in the Nahr al-Bared camp since May 20.
The bloodiest internal violence since the Lebanese 1975-1990 civil war has killed more than 200 people.
The Lebanese government lists Fatah al-Islam as a terrorist network aimed at destabilizing Lebanon.
