The Movement for National Development (MODENA), a Togolese opposition political party, has called for the extension of the electoral census period owing to shortcomings that have characterized the voter registration process since its launch on July 16, according to a statement published by the party on Thursday. According to the statement that was also signed by the party president Joachin Atsutse Agbobli, the slow pace of the voter registration process, lack of IT skills among officials in charge of voters registration and difficulties in identifying voters, who lack identity cards are some of the problems bedeviling the electoral census.
The party also deplores the persistent power cuts being experienced in the country, denounces the lack of sufficient fuel to run generators in order to ensure reliable electricity supply and decries the fact that some electoral areas have been provided with superior computers than others, according to the same source.
In further development, the party appealed to Togolese political players to "go beyond the General Political Agreement ( APG)" by adopting what the party calls a "Togolese National Pact" that will help resolve all the outstanding political problems that cannot necessarily be solved through an election.
