Ethiopia and France on Thursday agreed to prop up their existing ties, particularly in trade and investment sectors. Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and visiting French Foreign Minister Bernand Kouchner said they are ready to scale up the existing ties between their countries, which they said is in a good shape at present. They said Ethiopia and France are closely working in the areas of education, trade and other sectors, stressing the need for enhancing their cooperation in the economic sector. The two parties discussed during their talks how to jointly work towards facilitating ways through which French investors can come and work in Ethiopia, said a senior Ethiopian official who attended the talks. At a press briefing after the talks, Kouchner said he had valuable discussions with Prime Minister Meles on ways of scaling up Ethio-French relations in education, trade and other fields. He expressed hope that the existing relations between the two countries would further be enhanced in the future.
Kouchner, who was here on a working visit, stressed the need for establishing an Ethio-France mixed commission that would annually discuss ways of improving relations between the two countries.
He also said he discussed with Meles various issues in the Horn of Africa, particularly current situations in Somalia and Sudan's Darfur. France provided training for the Burundian troops due to be deployed in Somalia under the African Union's peacekeeping mission, Kouchner said. He also mentioned that France would provide all the necessary assistance towards making the mission of the AU peacekeeping force in Somalia successful.
