UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon condemned on Thursday the two suicide bomb attacks that killed at least 55 football fans in Baghdad on Wednesday.
"The secretary-general was shocked and saddened to learn about the two bomb attacks," Ban's press office said in a statement. "The secretary-general condemns this particularly reprehensible act which came at a moment when all of Iraq had joined together to celebrate the success of their nation," it said.
The UN chief voiced hope that "the people of Iraq will be undeterred by this despicable act and will come together in the spirit of national unity symbolized by their national football team." Two suicide car bombings struck Iraqi soccer fans taking to the streets to celebrate Iraqi football team's victory in Baghdad on Wednesday, killing at least 55 people and injuring 135 others.
