A Vietnamese court sentenced a couple and four others in jail for trafficking over 100 women, local newspaper Vietnam News reported Friday.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Court on Monday passed the imprisonment sentence of 7 years on the 46-year-old man Tsai I Hsien, 12 years on his 35-year-old wife Tran Thi My Phuong from southern Ca Mau province, and 5-10 years on the other four people.

According to the newspaper, between April 2005 and March 2006, the couple and their accomplices trafficked 126 Vietnamese women to Malaysia. Most of them were young women from the southern Mekong Delta who were lured with promises of marriages to foreigners within Vietnam.

In Malaysia, the trafficked women were forced to work as sex workers or marry elderly or disabled men, the newspaper said.
