Eight people died when an Isuzu truck was hit from behind by a bus that was traveling along Masvingo-Beitbridge road in southern part of Zimbabwe Thursday night, ZBC News reported on Friday.

Two of the accident victims died on the spot while the other six died while receiving treatment at a nearby clinic. Two infants below the age of three are among the dead.

Police spokesperson chief superintendent Oliver Mandipaka said the bodies have been ferried to Neshuro district hospital where postmortems will be conducted and next of kin are yet to be informed.

Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred when the Isuzu truck was hit from the back by the bus which was following too close and the driver of the truck lost control and veered off the road before overturning and landed on its left side.

They also said that the driver of the Isuzu was trying to avoid a pothole when the bus which was following too closely rammed into the back of the truck. The nine passengers that were in the truck were thrown outside.
